To PFD or Not To PFD

PFD’s are a comfortable way of protecting yourself and your loved ones’ lives;

but when used improperly they will be of no help at all when needed the most. Below are some simple things you can do to assure your PFD’s are always in working order

  • PFD’s are not intended for use by people sixteen years of age and younger. There are life vests specifically created for young people.
  • PFD’s are not recommended for non- swimmers or weak swimmers as they do not offer the buoyancy of a life vest.
  • If your PDF’s indicator is red it will not work. This means the mechanism has been fired or is incorrectly fitted. Green means it’s a go. Check your indicator before each use.
  • The bobbin, that inflates the vest, is only valid for three years. If you don’t know how old yours is, the date is printed on the side of the bobbin. Keep in mind that storing your PFD’s on board can decrease the lifespan of the bobbin, so check them at least once a year, and if in doubt replace them.
  • Unfold your PFD and check for rips, tears, or holes. Look at all seams to assure they are securely sewn and manually inflate to test. It won’t hold air if it is defective.
  • While the PDF is unfolded assure that the oral inflation dust cap (tube with cap on end) is in the stowed position.
  • Assure PFD is not twisted when rerolled and worn. It will not inflate properly if it is twisted.

While we hope you never need to find out, these seven simple steps can make all the difference in the outcome of an emergency situation.
