The Value of Spring Re-Commissioning

After having your engine serviced – see the blog on Spring tune-up – the next step would be to test all other systems on the boat to make sure that everything is working properly after the winter layup.

The following is a list of systems that recommissioning covers:

Lights: testing of all navigation lights, cabin lights and deck light

Bilge Pumps: testing all bilge pumps by adding water to the bilge to make sure the pump works. Also, testing the float switches to make sure they turn on the pumps, this includes the high-water alarm switch, to ensure all is well.

Bilge Blower: Ensure the bilge blower is working and inspecting the intake hoses and discharge hoses for deterioration, replacing where needed.

The Head: The marine toilet is inspected to make sure all valves and hoses are in good condition and the toilet operation is checked and inspected for any leaks. The holding tanks deck discharge port and macerator pump are also inspected; All repairs are carried out to avoid a failed toilet system while out on the water.

Wash Down Pump: inspecting the wash down pump to ensure it’s working and has no leaks.

The Domestic Water System: Fill the water tank and turn the pump on. Test all the faucets in the galley, head and deck shower for leaks. Make sure the water system is holding pressure, a pump that cycles on and off usually indicate a leak in the system

Electronics: test all electronics perform a V.H.F. radio check with the Coast Guard to make sure they are receiving the call clearly.

Stove: Test the propane system from top to bottom to make sure the system is up to code and the tanks and valves are in good operating condition. Most of all, check the propane detector that will alert you to a leak if there is one.

Carbon Dioxide Sensor: Test the carbon dioxide sensor and replace the unit if it has expired.

Windlass and Anchor: Inspect the controls for the windlass as well as the anchor rope, chain and shackles.

When all systems have been tested and repaired, if required, a sea trial and further testing while out on the water ensures all systems are fully operational for your boating peace of mind.

Performing these checks at the beginning of the season goes a long way to ensuring a trouble free boating season. There’s nothing more disappointing and possibly costly than breaking down when you are out on a planned trip with family and friends.

Have a fantastic trouble-free boating season!
