Marine Heads or The Trip We All Want to Forget

Most boaters have had the unfortunate experience of a broken down head.

Ours involved a boat full of grandparents, kids.. and well, you get the picture.

  • Get to know where the fuse to your macerator is located. Ask your service technician during your next tune up if you can’t locate it yourself.
  •  Always carry spare fuses on board. A 12vdc uses a 20amp fuse and a 24vdc uses a 15amp fuse.
  • Always use rapid dissolving toilet paper. It is readily available at most marine chandleries. Our weekend was caused by a child who liked to ball toilet paper around their hand! Rapid dissolving paper will break apart on its own and most clogs will work themselves out. The other advantage is that it won’t fill up your holding tank.
  • Always use digestive enzymes. No, we are not talking about the one you take with meals! Most marine chandleries will carry products like No Flex or Zyme Out. Look for a product that lubricates, eliminates odours and digests waste.

We hope you never have to deal with a “head gone wrong”, but if you do maybe one of these tips may help make it turn out all right.
